red eye 1 & red eye 2 is a musical performance inspired by a river source in Iceland called the Red Eye. The water flowing from the Red Eye has such high mineral content that it makes the entire riverbed red and the water to taste like blood. Departing from the deep hole, the water runs through a mossy valley, ending up as an enormous waterfall.
Liina Magnea translates the waters journey to a rite de passage that individuals and societies experience. The dancer has to break out of the dark hole in the ground to face dissolution and find a new beginning in a shapeshifting death. Ultimately to be born again as a waterfall. A choir weaves the journey and narrates the subtext of the story. The dancer has to invite death, kill the ego and dissolve into the shapeshifting collective.
The music is composed by Liina Magnea and is inspired by traditional Icelandic choir music and contemporary film scores by film composers Jóhann Jóhannsson and Hildur Gudnadóttir.
